Scarborough Rapidplay Chess Event - 20th June 2026

Background

In the 1920s a series of Chess festivals were held over the Whitsome tide week in Scarborough. These attracted some of the leading players of the time including World Champions Alexander Alekhine and Vera Menchik.

To commemorate the centenary of these events the Scarborough Chess Club is hoping to hold a number of commemorative events.

Location

Function Room First Floor, Roscoe Rooms. Roscoe Street, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, YO12 7BY

The location is five minutes walk from Scarborough Railway Station and associated Bus Stops. There are a number of Car Parks within walking distance of the venue.

Other Prizes including Grading Prizes will be awarded based on the number of entries.

Entrance Fee £15.00 (£14 by bank transfer.)

Time Control

All moves in 25 Minutes per player.

Rapid play rules apply. All players arriving more than five minutes late will be defaulted unless the arbiter decides otherwise. Repairings may take place five minutes after start of play.

General Photographs may be taken by the organisers for use in publicity. Separate consent for juniors will be obtained.

Refreshment Facilities

Tea and Coffee will be provided on a self service bases throughout the day.

Soft drinks and alcoholic drinks will be available to purchase from the bar.

A range of lunch options will also be available. Players are encouraged to place their orders on arrival or between rounds 1 and 2 to assist the provision avoid waiting during the lunch break.
