Doug Rawlinson Trophy 2025
The Scarborough Chess Club will start the new chess year with the traditional Doug Rawlinson Rapid Play event on the 1st September 2025. This will be a five round event with each player having 15 minutes for each of the games. The event will look to start at 7.30 pm promptly. Players do not need to be members of the club to play in the event.
British Chess Championship
The British Chess Championship for 2025 was held in Liverpool in the grand setting of the Hall.
Two players from the Scarborough area made the journey to enter the over 65 event. This was a seven-day seven round Swiss event with entries. Brian Stevens made three out of seven and only narrowly missed out on drawing his final game for an even score. He still managed a small grading improvement. Paul Hutchinson made five out of seven and came joint fourth winning a small prize.
Next year the event will be in Coventry.
Scarborough Rapid Chess Event
The second Scarborough one day Rapid Chess event was held on Saturday the 14 June 2025 at the Roscoe Rooms, Roscoe Street, Scarborough. The total number of entries was 36 which was a small increase from the number of played in the first event. The open was won with five points out of five by Zac Cansdale of Durham University with Paul Townsend of York clear second with four points.
The under 1700 section was won by William Kaldor of York University with Vidhyuth Kavi Sudagar of Ilkley Chess Centre clear second with four points.
The best performance by a Scarborough player was by Colin Weller who came third in the under 1700 group with three and a half points.
